M.E.C. Cecil Grossman Past Grand Superintendent

Glasgow Royal Arch Chapters Posted on 31st May 2016 by dsg25731st May 2016

M.E.C. Cecil Grossman Past Grand Superintendent

Cecil

M.E. First Grand Principal and Companions, it is with great sadness that I have to report on the passing of M.E.C Cecil Grossman whom I had known for the best part of 35 years.

Cecil was born in Glasgow in 1912 and spent a lot of his young years in the City of Belfast with his parents and his brother Fred.

He returned to Glasgow in the 1930’s and soon after got married and settled down in the furniture business he started up in Johnstone.

Unfortunately, his wife died of a brain haemorrhage after only two years of marriage.

Cecil spent a number of years as a Captain in the Army Bomb Disposal Unit during the second world war.

He was a very quiet and sincere person and found freemasonry in the early 1960’s. He was a member of Lodge Montefiore and was a member and Past First Principal of Progress Chapter No 377.

He served ten years as Provincial Grand Treasurer of Glasgow until he was commissioned as Depute Grand Superintendent by MEC William Hannah Stuart in 1992 and in 1997 at the grand old age of 85 he was appointed Grand Superintendent of the Province of Glasgow MEC Cecil worked until he was 97 and on his 100th birthday he attended the annual convocation of the Province of Glasgow when a deputation from Supreme Grand Chapter presented him with his diploma as Honorary Third Grand Principal, a very unique and rewarding occasion for someone who had touched so many Companions the length and breadth of Scotland.

He was a great source of knowledge and encouragement for me personally.

Cecil passed away on Wednesday 18th May 2016 at the age of 103. He was laid to rest in the Western Necropolis in Glasgow with due respect and accordance with his faith on Friday 20th May 2016.

Those of us who had the privilege to know MEC Cecil had our lives enriched by the experience and we are poorer today for his loss.

John N Steel (past Grand Superintendent)

George Burns Obituary

I have been informed this morning that P. Z. George Burns of St. Rollox R. A. C. No 144 died yesterday after a long illness.

George was one of the strong team of 1980’s Companions which included M. E. Companion William Douglas McMillan who made a great contribution to Craft and Royal Arch Masonry throughout their masonic lives. George was First Sojourner at my own(Robert McConnell) Royal Arch Degree in 1979 in his first of several terms in the Office.

When I learn the funeral arrangements I will advise all of you so that a proper turn out of Companions can advise the family of the respect in which George was held.

Fraternally
